A story of love, friendship, loss, and remembrance
A Bond Beyond Tradition

“I choose to honor the love we shared.”
Expressing the fact that my mother passed away is incredibly difficult for me.
As I sit here and write about it, the whole situation feels incredibly surreal. I can vividly recall my childhood years, when I was merely eight years old, lying in bed at night with my head buried under the covers. Sleep eluded me as thoughts of losing a loved one haunted my mind.
I have always feared the concept of death and the pain of losing people, and now I find myself in the very same situation. It is hard to accept that I am standing in the exact spot I have always feared.
Reality feels elusive.
Six weeks after my mother passed away, I sought solace in a medium’s guidance. The medium advised me to cease dwelling on the final moments of my mom’s life, explaining that by doing so, I inadvertently prevent her from finding peace. Although I have attempted to banish those memories from my thoughts, it proves to be a challenging task, as sorrow and heartache persistently attempt to infiltrate my mind.
My mom’s illness came as a shock to our entire family. She had always been so healthy, and nobody expected her to fall ill. I personally struggled to accept the reality of her condition and found myself in a state of denial.
In the weeks leading up to my mother’s passing, she was confined to a hospital bed. Despite her desperate pleas to come home, we were unable to fulfill her wish. I held onto the hope that the doctors were mistaken, unable to fathom the idea that my mother could be seriously ill.
During that difficult time, my sister, brother, and I remained by my mother’s side in the hospital. We were all present when she took her last breath.
Even now, it still feels surreal to witness the death of someone who was previously so vibrant and healthy. It is hard to comprehend how quickly things changed after her diagnosis.
We miss her terribly.
My relationship with my mother was far from traditional. We transcended the conventional roles of mother and daughter and became more like friends. At times, she would exhibit childlike tendencies while I assumed a parental role. Surprisingly, this dynamic worked wonders for us.
We formed an incredibly close bond, despite the occasional turbulence that characterized our relationship. We were inseparable, spending nearly all our time together until the fateful day she passed away.

Now, as I reflect upon our journey together, countless regrets flood my mind. However, deep down, I know that dwelling on these regrets is futile.
The truth is, we shared an extraordinary love for one another.
Our connection was unique and special, defying societal expectations. It was a love that defied traditional boundaries and flourished in its unconventional nature.
We laughed together, cried together, and confided in each other like the closest of companions. Our friendship went beyond the typical mother-daughter relationship, as we navigated life’s challenges side by side.
In some instances, I found myself guiding and supporting her, assuming the role of a parent. Yet, in many other moments, she showered me with wisdom, love, and affection, reminding me of the unbreakable bond we shared.
Our closeness, however, was not without its fair share of difficulties. We experienced storms that tested our relationship, but our love remained resilient throughout. We weathered those storms together, emerging stronger and more connected than ever before.
Our relationship was a testament to the power of love and understanding, even in the face of adversity.
Now that she is gone, I am left with a mix of emotions. Regrets try to consume me, but I know deep down that they serve no purpose.
Instead, I choose to honor the love we shared. I cherish the memories we created, the laughter we shared, and the lessons we learned together. Our relationship may have been unconventional, but it was built on a foundation of genuine love and unwavering support.
As I navigate the complexities of grief, I hold onto the fact that I was fortunate enough to experience such a remarkable bond with my mother. Our unique connection taught me the importance of embracing individuality and celebrating the unconventional.
I will forever treasure the love we shared, and I am grateful for the countless moments we spent as friends, as mother and daughter, and as each other’s pillars of strength.
